Seka ["Sister"]: affectionate Serbo-Croatian term; SEKA abbreviation of seminarna kuca ["House of Seminars"]; also a House for Seminars and Recreation for traumatised women and children living in the war zones of former Yugoslavia on the Adriatic island Brac (Croatia); where women and children of all ethnic and religious groups can meet in an atmosphere of respect, openness and mutual understanding - in a grass roots contribution to a peace process; SEKA receive 0,50 EUR per CD sold of the first 5000 copies, and after that the amount is increased to 1.- EUR.

The project sprang out of the relationship between the women's co-operatives working in the Hamburg area (Sukaina and SEKA Hamburg e.V.) and women's projects in Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia and Serbia that had been formed in response to the war. Since the start of the project in July 1997 SEKA provided

  • recreational stays with psychological support for 664 women and children, survivors of violence in war,
  • therapeutic groups or individual work for 716 workers / activists
    trainings.
  • These altogether 1.251 women and children came from more than 140 different women's groups or organisations from the countries of Former Yugoslavia and different ethnic and religious communities, from Bosnia-Herzegovina (Federation and Republika Srpska), Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Kosovo. On an average each person spent 23 days in SEKA-House.
  • For some women from the closer surroundings we also began to offer individual counselling on request.

The SEKA project is a glimpse of light at the end of the tunnel for those Women and children who get the chance to come out of the former war zones and stay at this beautifully situated house. Here they can generate new energy and hope to face their daily struggle when returning to their homes. "Even though the war itself might be over, it has yet to end for those who survived it".

SEKA will again apply for funding from various charities, embassies, etc., but the chances are slim, as many of these organisations only support a project once, or twice. Thus SEKA relies on donations, especially important to us are the many individuals who have made a monthly or quarterly pledge of money. We would very much welcome many more pledges of a fixed monthly or quarterly amount to SEKA, however, one-off donations help us too! It would be great if you would join the supportive circle for SEKA in aid of our offers to women and children who suffered from violence, war and ethnic cleansing, as well as our work for a permanent peace in the region through meetings, mutual understanding and reconciliation.
Please help us maintain the work of this women and children's peace project!
